Anguilla Island

Anguilla vacations will take you to one of the most idyllic locations in the Caribbean.  Anguilla Island is a relatively small part of the eastern, Leeward Island chain in the Caribbean, whose nearest neighbor is St. Martin, to the south.  With a population of  13,000, and a total area of less than 40 square miles,  Anguilla is renowned for its beautiful white sandy beaches.

With more than 33 beaches, it is a popular, though lesser known, vacation spot.  Anguilla has a warm climate, year round.  Its poor soil makes it essentially unsuitable for agriculture, yet Anguilla is famous for its coral reefs as well as its white sand beaches. Its main industries include tourism, offshore incorporation and management, offshore banking, and fishing.

About 70% of its population are Anguillian, and of these, more than 90% are descendants of slaves transported from Africa.

This small island has over 70 dining experiences with world renowned international and award-winning local chefs, and enlivened by drop-by, roadside barbecues and beachside bistros and grills.

For that reason, Anguilla Island is known as ‘the cuisine capital of the Caribbean’.  Choices range from Caribbean to French, Mediterranean to Continental, Creole to Italian and American to Indo-Chinese. Wit its abundance of fresh seafood, there are many options for creative cookery and more choices, with most menus offering some variation of the delectable local lobster or its smaller, sweeter cousin – crayfish.

Shoal Bay Anguilla Many come for the sand, the seafood and the serenity.  Day time activities include visiting art galleries, touring historic sites and museums, horseback riding, dancing to island beats, excursions to our undersea world, sailing and snorkeling, or quiet days basking in the sun and enjoying the simple pleasure of sunset strolls. Anguilla’s turquoise waters boast seven marine parks: Dog Island, Prickley Pear, Seal Island Reef System, Little Bay, Sandy Island, Shoal Bay Harbor Reef System and Stoney Bay Marine Park.  All beaches are public, so you have many to choose from.

The Anguilla National Trust was established in 1993 to act as custodian of Anguilla’s heritage, preserving and promoting the island’s natural environment and its archaeological, historical and cultural resources for present and future generations.

The island is easy to reach, with flights to Anguilla from Puerto Rico, St. Maarten and Antigua.  It is just one-hour east of Puerto Rico and seven minutes north of Dutch St. Maarten by air.  One can reach Anguilla by ferry, just a 20-minute ride from French St. Martin.

Entry requirements differ by country of origin, but a valid passport is required by all visitors to Anguilla. Visitors are also required to have a return or onward ticket.

Accommodations range from apartment hotels to five-star luxury resorts.  Caring, friendly and welcoming Anguillians, quickly embrace visitors as friends.  Anguilla resorts such as Temenos Villas,  and Ku Anguilla Hotel offer vacation packages for the whole family.  This nurturing and gracious culture has set Anguilla apart from many other vacation destinations, in the Caribbean and around the world.
